Bedford Park is notable for its place in the history of architecture and planning, for the unusual strength of its sense of community and for the remarkable lives of many of its past residents. As a result, there is a substantial body of writing about different aspects of the “First Garden Suburb.”
The bibliography which follows is not designed to be comprehensive, but to identify the main sources of information on different aspects of Bedford Park and provide a stepping stone to further research for those seeking references for the history, architecture and residents of Bedford Park.
The following libraries are good starting places in any search for the materials listed. The Chiswick Local Library Services contains much important material and holds the Bedford Park Society’s own archives, namely the T Affleck Greeves Archive and the “Secretary’s Holdings.” The two best general libraries in London for this kind of material are the Library of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the British Library. The general public are able to use these libraries, but for the RIBA and the British Library you should check the websites for admission procedures.
The Society is greatly indebted to George Butlin, BA Hons, FCSD (Retired) for his work in preparing this extensive bibliography. Thanks are also due to Sandra Grant and Charles Lawrence for their help in the compilation.
